It was bound to happen someday. I just didn’t expect it to be so soon.

This article in the BBC profiles plastic surgeons in Japan (where else?) who have put the latest and greatest in biomedical science to, well, ample use. Cellport Clinic in Yokohama now offers stem-cell therapy designed for breast augmentation, instead of the tried-and-true silicone1 implants. The website claims:

“Cellport Clinic Yokohama” performs CAL (Cell-Assisted Lipotransfer) soft tissue augmentation operation. This is our original treatment that uses the patient’s own soft tissue and adipose-derived stem cells.
Traditionally, cosmetic soft tissue augmentation has been undertaken by transplanting artificial and foreign materials such as a silicon[e] bag, bovine collagen, etc. In the CAL soft tissue augmentation operation, fat is suctioned from thigh or abdomen and transplanted together with adipose-derived stem cells into breasts, face, or buttocks without leaving wide scars. This treatment uses fat tissue and adipose-derived stem cells obtained from the patient him/herself and enables breast enhancement without complications associated with foreign materials. The enhanced breasts are soft and natural, so they are the patient’s “real” breasts.

The website goes on to review, in considerable detail, several papers in the medical literature on the hazards of conventional breast implants, with side effects ranging from lumpy appearance to implant rupture and infection. I’m not sure, however, that this warrants injecting cells from one’ butt into one’s jugs. I suppose moob augmentation/reduction is on the horizon…

Interestingly, doctors in Japan have been pretty active in researching how to use stem-cell therapy for various cosmetic procedures. Doctor Kotaro Yoshimura (吉村 浩太郎)2 has done plenty of work on harvesting adult stem cells derived from adipose tissue (i.e. body fat) for use in hair follicle replacement therapy (I presume this is for curing baldness, or perhaps for depilation.) It seems that his work, in some sense, has indeed reached fruition with his augmentation therapy. As far as I can tell, this was first presented in Sep. 3, 2005 in at the Hamamatsu Medical College in Shizuoka.

While we’re on the topic, why limit ourselves to female customers? Think of the penis enlargement potentialities… Soon we might have to add ’stem cells’ to our spam filters…

P.S. Felumpfus tried to downplay the wonder of this new technology by trying to compare it with botox. But messing around with a deadly neurotoxin just doesn’t have the same ring to it as something that sounds like it would eventually become 2-in-1 liposuction/augmentation plastic surgery:

:”oh we’ll inject a life-threatening toxin into you and your wrinkles will go away unwanted fat from your ass into your boobies and enhance your assets. Kill two birds with one stone with this not-to-be-missed 2-in-1 deal!”
“OK! where do i sign up?”

See? :)

Footnotes
  1. Pet peeve: silicone is not the same as silicon, despite the minuscle discrepancy in spelling. Silicon is the element they make computer chips from. Silicone is a silicon-containing polymer that is used to make extremely tough insulating layers, glues, and well, fake breasts.
  2. As is usual for Japanese websites, the original Japanese pages are much more detailed than the English counterparts. Dr. Yoshimura’s biography page in Japanese reveals a much more complete transcript of his presentations.
