L’oiseau rebelle and I (well, l.r. mostly) have been busy creating a new permanent page on this blog. I’m glad to say that we’ve finally collected enough information to actually show it in public without major embarrassment.
Without the aid of a safety net, please feel free to peruse our Incomplete Guide to Financial Aid for Singaporeans. We’ve pooled together what we know about free money - yes, no strings attached - earmarked for the sole purpose of giving Singaporeans1 the opportunity to study abroad.
If you want to study overseas but feel that Singapore scholarships are not your thing, and you need funding to go on anyway, this resource is for you. Please make full use of it!
As of right now we’re mostly limited to information about studying science and math in the United States, being the kind of thing the two of us are the most familiar with, but we hope that readers will be able to contribute what they know as well. Please please please, if you have any information that we’ve left out on the page, please leave a comment there or post on the forum, or email me.

And I’m not sure if this wasn’t mentioned because everyone knows it already, but for undergrads, Harvard, Princeton, Yale and MIT offer need-blind admissions — applications for financial aid will not reduce your chances of admission, and if you get in, you will be offered an amount of financial aid determined by your family income.

Elia:
As you may have figured out from the fact that everyone’s leaving their comments here, the Guide doesn’t have a comments form attached.
Strange, comments are enabled on the page.
No matter, I’ll get to it.
I have updated the page to reflect the contributions of all the above comments. Thanks!
How about setting up a similar post to assist Singaporeans in securing employment overseas, hehehe…I think its gonna be very useful for me.
Cheers,
Ray
Sorry, I got no experience.

I would like to add Williams College and Middlebury college to the list of need-blind institutions.
I have an old page on UK funding sources at:
http://www.cds.caltech.edu/~mleok/uk_funding.htm
also for US engineering students, one can obtain a Tau Beta Pi fellowship worth $10,000, which is particularly valuable if you are only considering pursuing a Master’s in Engineering past your BS.
Canada:
Many universities have teaching assistantships and non-teaching fellowships akin to those in the US (sorry, can’t be bothered to trawl through individual university websites — I know U. of Toronto and U. of Western Ontario definitely do). Some have them even for Masters programs.
And there’s also the Ontario Graduate Scholarship:

U.K. Financial Aid / Awards - Undergraduate - By School
University of Cambridge:
The Cambridge Trusts offer scholarships and part-cost bursaries to overseas and EU students who have been accepted for admission at the University of Cambridge.

Diodati,
Evil bond break tries to undermine Singaporeans’ work ethics by leading them to free money.
My friend a Singaporean Japan scholar told me the Japanese govt gave out scholarships to almost every country and in Singapore, the govt took these scholars which were free and repackaged them into scholarship with bonds but paid for by the Japanese govt. Now that is what I call smart govt.
Free stuff undermine work ethics and is destroying America. Singapore takes the best ideas from 1st world countries and incorporate it into our system.

You’re right on that count about Canadian scholarships. Most sci & engineering masters are automatically funded.

Dear Elia:
Great resource, deep from the bottom of my heart, an effort well done. How about Lee foundation scholarships? They provide stipends to Singaporeans going to University of British Columbia at Canada. Even the NUS president, Prof Shih mentioned that he obtained some funding from Lee foundation to go to McGill University for his Masters, but he subsequently went to Harvard.

I would provide a link from my blog to yours.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Dee
Maybe should make a wikipedia entry for this, hehehe.
Cheers,
Carleton College, a top 10 ranked (US News) liberal arts college offers the Nason scholarship specially for selected Singaporeans and the Starr scholarship for selected international applicants, the latter of which yours truly is a recipient of. In addition to meeting full demonstrated financial need, the scholarships pay for 2 round trip flight tickets as well as the rather costly health insurance (600/yr or so).
Thanks Jabir, added.
These information are great for those pursuing math or science related degrees and wot not.. but do you think i can use the same resources to apply for ‘free money’ to pursue a culinary course in paris, e.g.? I was in accounting but found my ‘calling’ in baking and patisserie related activity. gives me more joy than churning out the numbers. anybody’s got any advice for me, sil vous plait?
Hi shannieb,
I don’t have any information for trade schools like culinary school. Perhaps you can approach individual schools and ask if they provide any find of financial aid. Do let me know if you find anything and I’ll add it to the list.
