I used to think that there was simply no word in English that captured the essence of schadenfreude or 幸灾乐祸, but thanks to Luciferous Logolepsy, I’ve learnt that the word ‘epicaricacy‘ means just that.

Sure, it doesn’t roll off the tongue as neatly as does schadenfreude, but it certainly sounds similarly learned/pretentious/cultured.
